What have you done that took you past your comfort zone?

This is such gorgeous wisdom, from an extraordinary soul, and it applies way beyond artists.

The ability to live courageously and authentically is something that escapes so many of us for so long. In fact, it’s the secret sauce when you’re and Adventure Diva!

And so …

After watching this yesterday, I did something that I’ve been wanting (afraid) to do since August 4th, 2010. I took David Bowie’s advice and went out of my own depth.

After watching this yesterday, I did something that I’ve been wanting (afraid) to do since August 4th, 2010. I took David Bowie’s advice and went out of my own depth.

I signed up for a year long practicum with a master storyteller, Robert McKee, a man who has mentored the writers of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Downton Abbey, The Walking Dead, Vikings, The Wolf of Wall Street, Captain Phillip and almost everything put out by Pixar. He has been teaching for decades and his students have collectively won more than 60 Oscars and 200 Emmys.

If it’s any indication of just how important this is to me, 5 of the top 10 items on my bucket list are about writing and publishing, leading into the production of an indie t.v. show and film project (all around Adventures Divas, by the way 😉 ) So you see, having access to the wisdom of the man who mentors giants is pretty much delving into Fairy Godmother territory for me.

What’s takin’ ya so long?

So why has it taken me 5 years, 9 months and 8 days to finally get off my ass and just do it? Truthfully? Because I didn’t think I deserved it.

I didn’t feel worthy of my own Adventure.

Yeah …

So why has it taken me 5 years, 9 months and 8 days to finally get off my ass and just do it? Truthfully? Because I didn’t think I deserved it. (Who was -I- to be mentored by one of the greats? What if I’m not good enough? What if I fail?) Yeah …

I didn’t feel worthy of my own Adventure. That’s kind of an odd thing to say, but if you sit and think about the really big dreams you have in your own life, many of us are plagued by this insidious form of self-sabotage without even really knowing we’re doing it. It took a life-threatening illness, the end of a marriage, kids growing up and leaving home, and 5 years of being an almost-empty-nester to finally come to terms with exactly how much I was getting in my own way. Once I identified it, it took a whole lot longer to figure out how to fix it, but I have, and I am.

And since the truth of the matter really is that the best things often reside way out of our comfort zone, I’m going to keep right on pushing out. I’ve set a goal for myself to participate in Mr. McKee’s in-person STORY seminar in L.A. for two days this October, which, trust me, is way outside of my comfort zone! While I’m there, I’d like to reconnect with another big-hearted storyteller who left a mark on my soul years ago when I was working on a project for kids in Africa: David Rosenberg, who, coincidentally, just happened to be a writer for the RugRats t.v. show that my kids loved when they were growing up here. (This storytelling: there’s a theme here, no?)

So, Adventure Divas, what have YOU done that took you past your comfort zone? How did it turn out? Was it the kind of “Aha! moment” that makes you want to do it again?

If you haven’t gone there yet, would you like to? What is it that calls to your soul and scares the hell out of you, all at the same time?
