Have fun. Do good. (…and be sure to do your homework first ;)

There are lots of ways to have unconventional adventures, and some of my favourites are the ones that allow you to have fun while doing good.

CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) shares some wonderful (and essential) tips for ensuring that social justice adventures are both safe and meaningful.

Good intentions don’t always lead to good outcomes. This list is a terrific launchpad to cover your bases before traveling abroad to help.

What have you done that took you past your comfort zone?

David Bowie on Authenticity. What have YOU done that took you out of your comfort zone?

David Bowie has some gorgeous wisdom about pushing out of your comfort zone. In fact, I took his advice to heart and pushed way outside of my own. (Click through and I’ll tell you a little bit about that, and then I’m going to bust out my magic wand.)

So, Adventure Divas, what have YOU done that took you past your comfort zone? How did it turn out? Was it the kind of “Aha! moment” that makes you want to do it again?

If you haven’t gone there yet, would you like to? What is it that calls to your soul and scares the hell out of you, all at the same time?

Let’s talk! I’ve set a place for you over at the digital kitchen table, and I’m making it my personal mission to be YOUR fairy godmother! I am going to have your back, girl, and together, with a little help from our friends, we’re going to figure out how to have that Adventure that has been calling you too!

Carpe diem, baby!

Happy YOU Year!

Happy YOU Year, sister Adventure Diva! This is NOT just another January 1st, and here’s why … it’s one that starts with a simple truth: you deserve adventures!

It’s the first day of a year filled with genuine, true-you adventures.
It’s one that starts with a baby step instead of a flurry of resolutions.

[VIDEO] How we’re going to put the “Adventure Lab” to work for good …

How we're going to put the "Adventure Lab" to work for good ..

In my last note I shared a video where I explain a bit about the “Adventure Lab” we’re about to begin building here at the “Adventures with the Estrogen Army” web site. I want to tell you a bit more about how we’re going to put the “Adventure Lab” to work for good …

Adventures with the Estrogen Army is an adventure incubator and collaborative resource hub for women over 40 who are hungry to create epic adventures on a shoestring budget.

Our “Adventure Lab” will serve as a “dream catcher” where women can design and share their own adventures – from micro to epic – and discover others they may not have imagined yet. We will be stocking it with tools to make it easy to discover, plan and launch big-hearted adventures fit for the sassy adventure diva you are, in the company of sisters who have “been there, done that”.

We’ll be sharing ideas, tools and resources to make it easier to give ourselves a hand up, and doing it in a way that doesn’t leave people out. Not everyone with big dreams has a big budget, and this project is about finding ways of making sure every adventure diva has a chance to make her bucket list a “been there … done that” list.

Giving Women-at-Risk at Hand Up

With a focus on asset-building and mentoring, we deal with the whole person in a way that is inclusive, regardless of financial means, and that creates opportunities for women at risk both in our local communities, and in developing nations.

In fact I’m so committed to ensuring that women from every walk of life have a fair shot that I’ll be investing 20% of the profits from the “Adventures with the Estrogen Army” project into non-profit programs that help women at risk give themselves a hand-up.

Have fun. Do good. Not a bad way to embrace act 2 in our lives, huh?

[VIDEO] Wondering about the inspiration behind the Estrogen Army project? Here’s a 2 1/2 minute primer …

Sue Braiden welcomes you to the Adventure Lab

Hi! I’m Sue Braiden of “Rock. Paper. Estrogen” and I want to tell you about the “Adventures with the Estrogen Army” project.

I’m 51 years old, and like many of you, I’ve been a mom, a wife, a career woman and a community servant, and now that I’m about to be an empty-nester, I’m ready for an adventure! The catch? I have to do it on a shoestring budget, and I bet many of you have the same challenge too.

So I’m setting the digital kitchen table and inviting you to put your elbows on it with me. It’s a place where we can share our stories about the things we crave, what worked for each of us, and how we might help each other have those epic adventures we’ve been dreaming of all our lives.

Our Indiegogo Campaign is only 12 hours old and already 40% funded and on the front page

December 22, 2014 in by Sue Braiden

Our Indiegogo campaign was 40% funded and on the front page in under 12 hours

One of the most surreal moments I’ve ever had: the “Adventure Lab” Indiegogo campaign is only 12 hours old, and we’re already 40% funded and on the front page beside my friends John and Evonne.

I was able to buy the tool set to start building our Adventure Journal and courseware, laying the foundation when the campaign was only 2 hours old.

Thank-you to those who continue to share the campaign! It’s your social media boosts that are making the difference and getting this in front of new eyes.

Best Christmas present ever.

My heartfelt thanks!

Let’s Build an Adventure Lab Together!

December 21, 2014 in by Sue Braiden

Let's Build an Adventure Lab Together!

For more than 12 years I’ve dreamed about launching a project for women over 40 who want to have epic adventures on a shoestring budget. I wanted to create something that made it easy to share ideas, tools and resources. I wanted to empower women to tell their own stories, and dream big, regardless of financial means. I wanted it to be something that was more than a business: it needed to be a launchpad that also embraced women at risk for whom the idea of an adventure doesn’t look much further than basic survival. I promised myself that I would cultivate it as an experiment that allowed me to test-drive bold ideas with very little money, with other ordinary women just like me at my side.

Last I made good on that promise. On December 12th I received my master business license for “Rock Paper Estrogen”. Last night I publicly opened the doors here at the “Adventures with the Estrogen Army” project web site. Now I’m inviting you to help me build an “Adventure Lab” to make it easy for women around the world to tell their own stories in a way that empowers both themselves, and others, regardless of financial means.

Let’s build an Adventure Lab together!

If you’re still hunting for that perfect Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa gift for your mum, your sister, a friend, or some Adventure Diva in your life, why not pop over to Indiegogo and sponsor the Adventure Lab project in her name for as little as $10? You’ll be giving her a lifetime of adventures, and she’ll be permanently recognized as a “Founding Member” both here on our web site, and in workshop and course materials.

http://igg.me/p/adventure-lab-rock-paper-estrogen/x/730644

And ladies, this is one year you’re not going to break those New Year’s resolutions! January 1st is right around the corner, and whether or not you join in as a sponsor, I hope you’ll join me at the digital kitchen table to start sharing your dreams and plotting your own epic adventures!

Not everyone has the means to help with their wallet, and that’s okay! If you would consider sharing this note with your family and friends, inviting them to participate at the Adventure Lab web site, free of charge, that would be a really wonderful help in shaping something that I hope will be of value to you as much as it is to me 🙂

Thank you for helping in whatever capacity you can. I appreciate it more than my words could ever convey!

Deepest gratitude …
Sue.

Adventure U: Taking back September.

September 4, 2014 in , by Sue Braiden

Bouquet of Pencils

“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

If ever a quote summed up the infernal pull on the heartstrings I feel each September, it’s that one. Tom Hanks said it to Meg Ryan in the movie “You’ve Got Mail”.

It perfectly encapsulates that longing to return to the hallowed halls of some school, nearly any school, to saturate myself with learning once again.

My daughter has just returned for her final year at college, and I always feel so envious when she comes home with armfuls of books and school supplies, like I’m missing out on some long lost rite of passage.

I got to thinking about this and realized that this adventure we’re all on together — the quest to create adventures — is ripe with that “back to school” magic, is it not? Learning to create epic moments on a shoestring budget; giving ourselves homework assignments to figure out what our heart desires, what assets we have to meet each with, and what we still require; learning to explore safely; learning to trust ourselves; they’re all just a monumentally more personal (and seriously cool) versions of hitting the books once again.

This “aha!” moment lead to another …

Wouldn’t it be brilliant if we could expand this little digital kitchen table we’re all putting our elbows on to include a space where we can capture what we’re learning along the way and share it in small, simple, meaningful ways with each other? — sort of an “Adventure U” where we can each contribute what we know and continue to learn about the art of crafting great adventures?

That is, after all, the spirit of the Estrogen Army project, so cultivating a slightly more structured learning environment in addition to our usual playgrounds might just amplify what we’re capable of!

When the idea first struck me I dove into finding simple tools to begin making this real. I found the perfect kit, and set out to integrate it, only to find out it no longer plays nicely in our particular backyard.

I am undaunted. 😉

In the days ahead I’ll be working toward the goal of “taking back September” and finding creative ways for us to collaborate on even more estrogen-charged adventures!

What kinds of things might -you- teach sister adventure divas?

You might not realize it just yet, but there is something valuable and unique that you have experienced or know that will be very empowering to others!

For some of us this revelation might not come until we’ve been poking through things a bit here. For others, we might already have an idea about something that could be a really great springboard to help other women have safe, life-altering, epic adventures.

I’ve opened a conversation at our kitchen table where we can begin brainstorming a bit. This will help us understand the kinds of tools we might need to make sharing our knowledge easy and fun.

Why not pop in for a bit? Even if you’re not sure what you might share yet, just putting your elbows on the table might inspire a thinking infection!
